Decide if this is worth fixing.

If you have 2 IDE ports on the motherboard, and use 40 wire cable, then both drives can be MASTER on each IDE port. i uninstalled that, it the problem got better. like today right before i posted this thread, i inserted my new FEAR cd. this contact form The 'freeze' you are describing sounds like the drive having problems reading the disc. so the cd-rom does work. i turned it off with the power button and it was stuck on the packard bell logo again untill i pulled it out.

May be hard to see, but try examining the condition of the laptop's internal CD-Rom connections, and also the connection from there to the motherboard (ribbon?).
