In my personal experience, overheating will generally cause lockups as well and graphical distortions before getting to a point where it powers down the system. Hoover it out. I unplugged the card and removed it from the system thinking maybe I could unscrew the fan and see if any dust was clogged in it. Furmark Stability Test it has a habit of building up while not causing problems up until the point where lots of things start to go wrong.
