He could have lost hundreds of files representing thousands of hours of work. If the bar at startup is GREEN, then you are definitely running either the original version of XP (October 25, 2001) or XP SP1 (September 9, 2002).
It makes it much easier to deal with stuff like this when you know others have traveled the same path.
