a couple of dvds actually played and i was also starting to have cd-rw disc problems, but that worked to and I was able to burn a cd. I suggest downloading the latest driver of DVD-ROM from computer manufacture, then installing in clean boot manually. My take: DVD drive (hardware) is rarely a problem. "It's the software, stupid!" It took 4 full productive days of my life to work-around this problem. Someone should take Microsoft to court for this, as this has probably cost MILLIONS to all the users trying to solve this by replacing their burner, media & even PCs. When ever I insert a CD or DVD into the drive it makes a type of sound (when plastic paper is inserted into the running processor's fan) and gets restarted. Members can monitor the statuses of their requests from their account pages. I have tried putting in recordable disc, CD-R, DVD and even the Resource cd, it still didnt detect one of these discs.
