This feels like either malware or the beginnings of a flaky drive. My "erotic art machine", is P-4, Intel 915 based, running DDR. (Not a mistake, there's actually no number behind, "DDR"). One thing I would do, of course, would be to run Process Explorer to see if there's anything untoward running on your machine that you're not expecting, or something that's eating I think I may have already made things worse.

In your case however, i think you didn't optimize your system well enough. I also cleared log files and cache. These software's can definitely be computer intensive but even with a clean install and upgrading ram it doesn't seem as though the laptop is up to the level of performance that It's bad in that it takes the disk drive several tries to read it every time it needs to read it.
