I think it has to definitely be software loading after windows is booted. However when I set the timer in the power options to sleep after xx minutes it never goes to sleep on its own. My theory is the PC shuts down and or goes into sleep mode before the Graphics card gets a chance to 'power off' leaving it in a Limbo state. My point here is that I may not find anything in the logs - simply because I'm not experienced with the specific things I need to look for in this case. I started this site as a technical guide for myself and it has grown into what I hope is a useful reference for all. Ditto what "SageDesign" said.
Power Management * Uncheck: "ALLOW THIS DEVICE TO WAKE UP THE COMPUTER" That will take care of the problem-- at least the one that this causes. I have tried a test, and as soon as I restart the computer and login, I put the computer to sleep immediately and it does it correctly.
